As part of the series Frei.Zeit, the class of Prof. Paco Knöller of the Hochschule für Künste Bremen is a guest at the GAK. Contrary to expectations, however, the twelve students of the “Drawing and Painting Class” will not exclusively present works of art in these two classical artistic genres. The group exhibition rather brings together different media, from site-specific installations to photography, from sculpture to video.
Nevertheless, if one looke for the lowest common denominator of the twelve positions, one finds it in an intensive preoccupation with the interweaving of artistic strategies and everyday influences. Banal patterns of everyday culture are elevated to motifs in the image, everyday actions – transferred to the exhibition space – visualize the fluid boundaries between art and life. The transformation of everyday life through artistic design is negotiated between two poles: sometimes intuition, the spontaneous and immediate plays the leading role, sometimes systems and structures, the planned and the ordered dominate. The capture of the outside world always takes place in close alignment with the inner world, from which a signature, an artistic gesture manifests itself in the work.
“HAPPILIY EVER AFTER”, in German fairy tales “…and if they did not die, then they are still alive today”, marks in the fairy tale the happy end of a story after passing great challenges. Perhaps this can be transferred to the occasion of the exhibition: it is the retirement of Professor Paco Knöller, who is now retiring after twelve years of teaching at the Hochschule für Künste in Bremen.
