von seitenlinien

In this year’s class exhibition, the rooms of the GAK will be used by the class of Rosa Barba of the Hochschule für Künste Bremen (class for intermedia photography). For one week the students have the opportunity to present their work and to enter into public comparison within the framework of an institution. They tell a story “von seitenlinien“.

“von seitenlinien” describes a view of lines that run parallel or possibly criss-cross and reveal new and interesting facets. Subtle lines that mark out a form, a context, suddenly dissolve again to finally give an idea of how many centres are located in space. Side lines can border a playing field, they can be the sides of a paper and form the frame for a story. The frame can be broken, lines can be crossed. Sidelines can be crossroads and re-define connections, they can be shortcuts or detours. In either case they open up a different view of the world.

Not only the students had to realize that it is a certain difficulty to find their connecting moment among 21 artistic positions, but the title of the exhibition, “von seitenlinien”, masters this challenge. Each position interprets it in its own way, for each participant standing on the sidelines means something different. It is precisely because of this that parallels and questions arise, which all students deal with individually. What is the aim of aims? And how do we deal with them? One thing is certain, the demands on art and on oneself should always be the same. The class of Rosa Barba looks from its point of view at what is happening in the world. Each individual position forms its own side line in the totality of a large network, with the most diverse references and backgrounds. As the class itself puts it in the jointly developed text of the poster and announcement card:

“move along the borders / til a form emerges / the center instigates / in various distances / other centers / a beginning and an end / a termination / a crisis / change / the end remains open / the erasure / von seitenlinien“

The class for intermedia photography will present some photographic works as well as videos, which will be shown partly in an installation and partly in a cinema situation. Furthermore, various materials and techniques can be found in the exhibition. Among other things, sculptural-looking installations are exhibited, which in turn are combined with video projections. Two positions will directly make use of the walls in a graphic confrontation and an audio work will contain the view from the GAK rooms on the Weser as the only visual element. The students will conceive their works especially for this occasion, present them for the first time or reposition them.
