Franziska Bauer
Kleister

26.11.2022–26.03.2023

Since October 2022, the work Kleister (paste) by Franziska Bauer has been developing in the framework of publics&publishings. It situates itself on the wall in the entrance area as well as the temporary bookstore of GAK. The basis is always the printed A3 format as well as the Futura typeset. Composed of individual sheets, statements and questions line up, overlay and overwrite and/or think one over the other. Images, breaks and layers emerge.

Between typography and poetry, the work reflects on publishing and putting sth. out into the open, while also relating to the relationship that GAK itself has to the public. Kleister is addressing the public without being a service and raises questions about the forms of participation in and at the institution. Kleister is also a discussion about making books and the physical circulation of knowledge.

When pasted over, the paper and the walls on which the work presents itself become three-dimensional and become a body in opposition to other bodies. By subtly bringing the wall to the fore, it is emphasized as an interface. A niche area that is also reflected in architectural theory: how do walls structure the user’s relationship between inside and outside, between spatial structures and feelings. Here real bodies come into consideration as well as (drawn, written or desired) imaginations. Translations and gaps and heterotopic possibilities arise between them.

Franziska Bauer is a book designer, artist, organizer and intersectional queer feminist. In 2019 she completed her studies at the HfK Bremen with the title Die gerade Linie, die existiert nur in der Vorstellung (The straight line, it only exists in the imagination).
Her independent and free works establish socio-political references to snapshots of everyday life asking questions about linearity and chaos, about the processual nature of writing and the physicality of publishing..

A work-in-prgress within the framework of publics&publishings.

publics&publishings is a joint digital platform run by GAK Gesellschaft für Aktuelle Kunst, Künstlerhaus Bremen, and the Kunsthalle and Kunstmuseum Bremerhaven. Based on our respective exhibition, event, and mediation programs, the online platform gathers a range of contributions dedicated to spaces both as frameworks for activity and as normative codings, speaking to and with art in different ways. At the same time, the platform will discuss and negotiate questions of plurivocal publishing
