The exhibitions of the Meisterschüler*innen, which have been held annually at the Weserburg since 2011, provide a multifaceted insight into the quality and diversity of Bremen’s current art production. A special highlight is the awarding of the Karin Hollweg Prize, which is linked to the exhibition. Endowed with a total of 15,000 euros, it is one of the most important art promotion prizes at German art colleges. Half of the prize money is reserved for an institutional solo exhibition in Bremen.

In 2021, 20 artists will be involved in the exhibition, all will be showing new works. The entire spectrum of contemporary art is represented, from painting, ceramics and sculpture to location-specific interventions, sound works, and room and video installations. A special feature of this year’s exhibition is the cooperation with the GAK Gesellschaft für Aktuelle Kunst (Society for Contemporary Art), so that the works of the 2021 Meisterschüler*innen can be seen in two buildings in the immediate neighbourhood.

LAST NOTES BEFORE ENTERING THE BUILDING stands for diversity in terms of content and form. It shows how young artists create receptive forms of contemporary art in the field of tension between artistic practices, theoretical considerations and aesthetic settings. Very different questions and problems are addressed. For example, the paintings and sculptures of Paul Ole Janns explore the representational diversity of the world around us with the means of a programmatically emphasized subjectivity. If this is associated with the lyrical and casual via figuration, Ryosuke Aratani’s painting is about the artistic play between color and form, surface and texture, control and gesture, structure and rhythm with the possibilities of abstraction
