In the context of the series Frei.Zeit, initiated at irregular intervals by the GAK Gesellschaft für Aktuelle Kunst, students of the Hochschule für Künste Bremen present their work in the one-week exhibition “wir tanzen gak”. The participants were invited by the university professors Andree Korpys/Markus Löffler and Achim Bitter/Uschi Huber. “wir tanzen gak” is supplemented by evening events beyond the classical format of the exhibition. The contributions presented range from object and photography to video and cooperative projects, performance and concert, and provide insights into the individual approaches of their producers.

“wir tanzen gak” does not revolve around a theme specially issued to the students. Rather, it is intended to test the challenge of finding the balance necessary for a successful group exhibition between an adequate presentation of the individual work and the merging of the individual contributions into a functioning whole. As the title already suggests, it is also about a form of animation that can entail leaving the usual exhibition formats and programs for an art institution: The students dance gak – an unknown, strangely unrestrained sounding dance.

Series Frei.Zeit: In the chronological sequence of an exhibition house, there is the moment between exhibitions when the previous presentation has been removed but the following one has not yet been set up. An in-between moment in which the rooms of the institution show themselves in their purest form. This time holds the possibility for events that develop a language independent of the institution’s programme. In order to create a platform for such events, the GAK makes its rooms available in the series Frei.Zeit on the first weekend after the end of the exhibition until the beginning of the next exhibition.
