Wade Guyton

2008

The American Wade Guyton is one of the internationally most famous representatives of a young New York painting scene. In his works he deals with the formal repertoire of modernism from Constructivism and Bauhaus to Minimalism and Appropriation Art. However, his working tool is not a brush, but an inkjet printer. He designs his abstract representations on the computer and then prints them on canvas or paper. The deliberate inclusion of sources of error during the printing process – such as an unusual background, insufficient or exaggerated addition of paint and pulling on the material – creates streaks and distortions that help the serialized template to achieve an original result.

Guyton’s annual edition consists of a series of drawings developed exclusively for GAK. Closely related in appearance to his most recent large-format canvas works, they show black surfaces printed in different forms and varying colour intensity over torn out catalogue pages with paintings from the 1950s. As a result, they emphasize the underlying painting as much as they conceal it.
