The two green objects could be fragments. Parts of an organic structure, perhaps some kind of pelvic bone or the antlers of an unknown animal, shards of an archaeological find, the remains of an everyday life thousands of years ago. But if you look closely, there are no open fractures and the ceramics are evenly covered by the green glaze. The apparent fragments are “whole” in themselves. Like the two halves of a silver friendship heart that take on form and meaning only when the pre-cut zigzag line is broken. Doesn’t the red appear as a counter-image in the green of the glaze? In this sense, the purchase of the two sculptures is tied to an instruction: The buyer keeps one sculpture and must give the second to someone else. The relationship between the giver and the recipient is open. Just as the idea of the annual gift is based on the sharing of proceeds between the artist and the institution, the annual gift itself is to be shared. Whatever emotions it is charged with in the process, whether it becomes a symbol of friendship or of loss, is not inscribed in it.
Christine Moldrickx (born 1984 in Münster) studied at the art academies in Düsseldorf and Frankfurt and was a scholarship holder at the Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten in Amsterdam from 2015 to 2016. She lives and works in Düsseldorf and Amsterdam.
