Shannon Bool

2010

Canadian artist Shannon Bool’s art-making is an exploration of contextual shifts. Bool is fascinated by the recurrence of ideas across different cultures and ages. In her artistic practice Bool seeks to revitalise everyday phenomena and references from literature, psychology, mythology, art history and music by returning to their originary meanings.

Bool’s annual edition for the GAK shifts this focus to the spaces between objects in a photographic work which offers a birds-eye view of cobblestone paving. Bool’s focus is not on the stones as such, but on the spaces between them, which she has brought into the foreground using acrylic paints applied directly to the baryta paper. The resulting images are a unique and eye-catching exploration of the aesthetics of the invisible and unseen spaces that surround us in our everyday lives.
