The starting point for the oeuvre by duo Peles Empire is Peles Castle in Romania with its historicist blend of interiors comprising stylistic and epochal copies. The artists photographed the interiors and use them in a progressive process of alienation and abstraction as a source for their work: initially the room is converted into a flat image, composed of the conventional A3 copy format. Out of this evolve sculptural or twodimensional works, which in turn are photographed. This visual material then leads to the creation of even more new shapes, formats and photographs…
The annual edition for the GAK reflects Peles Empire’s approach: four castings in A3 format made from cement and paper, in which copies of details of the castle photographs are used. The different qualities of the materials allow the emergence of structures between porous and smooth, open and closed surfaces, between two-dimensional and sculptural effects – corresponding to the title F X G which represents the mathematical notation for a fold.
