Art in public space has an eventful history: from architectural art and drop sculptures to urban programmes and major exhibitions to subversive and participatory projects. Achim Bitter, Britta Peters and Andreas Siekmann stand for both curatorial and artistic perspectives on public space. They will present and compare their different experiences. What can or must art achieve in public space? What prerequisites must be met? Are the strategies in public space different from those in institutional space? How can sustainable projects locate themselves between private, commercial and administrative interests and vandalism in urban space? Should they highlight the city centre as a beacon or integrate the periphery? Is there such a thing as “good” or “bad” art in public space? What future trends can be identified? Questions upon questions, which will be dealt with in the discussion of the panelists and in the discussion with the audience.
„Inside the City“ is an exhibition project of GAK Gesellschaft für Aktuelle Kunst, Künstlerhaus Bremen and Centre for Artists’ Publications in the above-mentioned institutions and at numerous public space locations in Bremen.
