The six workshops in the How To: Embody the Flow of Time Differently series will sketch out alternative futures based on stories and memories. Each will combine theory and practice, addressing issues such as colonial continuities in Bremen’s urban space, the relationship between body, space, memory, and trance, and the self at the end of the world.

For the artist Thamires Fortunato Martins, collages are a way to develop a contemporary Afrofuturist aesthetic. In this aesthetic, she critically examines injustices and creates new perspectives that reveal ways out of prejudice and dehumanization.
In my workshop I want to form other possible narratives for the future with you. Together we will compose images in which peripheral narratives are reconstructed and resistance is made visible. I will introduce you to the work of great Black women. Together we will listen to music as a form of resistance, look at images, discuss them, relate them to our own reality, and produce collages.

My name is Anaïs Héraud-Louisadat, I am working as an artist and art therapist and I am based in Berlin. My artistic practice focuses on painting, performance and artistic interventions in public spaces as well as institutions. Many of my projects develop around the relations and draw connections between aspects of local historical and social contexts and contemporary issues.
For this 3 hours workshop I would like to invite you to take part in a shared artistic experience tackling the topic of personal und collective history(ies). We will mainly work practically! I will propose body work, we will draw and paint. The workshop is open to everyone and doesn’t require any artistic knowledge and experience. The workshop will be taught in English and/or German. Please contact me for any special needs – I will then adapt the exercises – and bring clothes in which you can move and paint.

Get Moving, Get Talking, Get Making
Workshop with Jeremiah Day

In this short intensive workshop Jeremiah Day will get us up and moving-and-talking, working with Simone Forti’s Logomotion methods to spark new short improvisational pieces. This work comes from dance and the visual arts, not theater, and offers a surprising and easy entry into performing. The workshop will start with a physical warm up, some improvisational games and lead to making short works of “real-time-composition.” The workshop builds on the tradition of “new dance” and how it continues to propose a counter model to both the “show business” and “high” models of performance and culture, and instead offers a still relevant model of art as a central and public element of what Hannah Arendt called “the web of human relationships.”

Trance: Body, Space and Memory
Workshop with Laís Machado

Transatlantic, transdisciplinary, and transmigratory are words Laís Machado uses to describe her experiences and her approach to body, space, and borders. In her works, the artist and co-founder of the platform ÀRÀKÁ addresses her own vulnerability and Afro-Brazilian existence. Her starting point is always her own body, thus enabling new, flexible bodies to emerge.
In my workshop, I would like to explore with you how the body shapes and intervenes in architecture through the relationships it can create. We will examine forms of theater and performance, but I will also offer exercises throughout that will help us to think about bodies in different ways.
The How to: workshop series is a translation exercise taking place in the spaces between language and gesture and across cultures and geographical distances. It does not seek to conceal the entanglements, misunderstandings, and impossibilities that accompany it; instead, it will experiment with a new kind of ethical and aesthetic present.
How to: The Flow of Spirit (Oliver Bulas & Annette Hans) has been realizing dialogic workshop situations since 2018. These have taken place in Hamburg, Berlin, Rio de Janeiro, and Lyon.
