  • Nina Hoffmann: Ich brauche wenig Wirklichkeit (I rarely need reality), 2014, Courtesy the artist

Anna Huhn and Matthias Ruthenberg
Ich brauche wenig Wirklichkeit (I rarely need reality)

28.08, 07:00 pm

The publication Ich brauche wenig Wirklichkeit (I rarely need reality) is an integral part of the work of the same name in the exhibition by Nina Hoffmann at the GAK. For the two-part work, the artist visited different people with whom she had been unhappily in love in the past. On the one hand, she re-enacted situations with them, as she had longed for a possible relationship, captured them photographically and placed the resulting images on revolving walls in the room. For the publication, Hoffmann conducted interviews with the same people, their unfulfilled loves, and thus compared them with reality: When did the interviewees first noticed her? When did they first realize that they were desired? Did they even notice it? Which ideal image of love did they have then/today and what did it influence? The discrepancy between reality and desire is measured here in a way that is pleasurable as well as merciless, surprising as well as occasionally clichéd, and an unembellished look is taken at what we are all constantly confronted with – the possibilities and impossibilities of interpersonal relationships.

In close cooperation with Nina Hoffmann, the Bremen artists Anna Huhn and Matthias Ruthenberg have selected excerpts from the publication to present them in a dialogical staged reading. The resulting performative level extends the approach to „Ich brauche wenig Wirklichkeit (I rarely need reality)“ beyond the classic exhibition visit.
