Stefan Gronert
The Revitalization of the Still Life: Jan Groover and the Consequences

02.11, 07:00 pm

In his lecture The Revitalization of Still Life: Jan Groover and the Consequences, Stefan Gronert discusses why the American photographer Jan Groover was little known in Europe for a long time, although she has demonstrably made an important contribution to the more recent history of artistic photography. Starting with a general characterization of her oeuvre, Gronert poses the question of Groover’s specific historical position, which can be explained in the light of comparisons with current artistic approaches, such as those of Annette Kelm, Christopher Muller, Jörg Sasse or Claus Goedicke.

Dr. Stefan Gronert (*1964) is an art historian and photo theorist. After studying art history, educational science, German studies and philosophy at the Ruhr University in Bochum, he worked at the Kunstmuseum Bonn, from 1996 as director of the Graphic Collection and from 2009 as curator for contemporary art. Since 2016 Gronert has been curator for photography and media at the Sprengel Museum Hannover. He also teaches and publishes in the field of modern and contemporary photography.
