Norman Sandler

A bank statement, a train ticket, a weather report. These mundane accompanying symptoms of everyday life serve as the motif of Norman Sandler’s three drawings from his ongoing series as every day. At first glance, the works resemble machine-made, black-and-white printouts. But on closer inspection, the pages reveal an irregularity that subverts expectations: artistic markings come to the fore and unmask the copy in the tiniest discrepancies. Sandler takes on the inconspicuous and elevates it to his drawing motif, which he transfers to paper with graphite in the style of the Old Masters. Through the transformation, the worthless original becomes overstated. Portraits of everyday life emerge, cherishing the ordinary as a testimony of our common existence. Who does not know the feeling when they see the weather forecast “Bremen, 0.9 degrees, cloudy”, the irony of the “share weather” button, or the disillusioning reality of a bank statement?
