Liz Rech
Swarm principles. Techniques of camouflage and other useful knowledge of movement

20.06, 04:00 pm

Actions and interventions in public space have become an integral part of the repertoire of protest forms of social movements. The boundaries between site-specific art and political intervention are blurred. Performative choreographies of gathering, such as marches, demonstrations or circle dances, have always played an important role in urban negotiation processes. These arrangements and movements of people facilitate communal solidarity, but they are also powerful instruments for expressing collective identities, demands and goals.

In the workshop Swarm principles. Techniques of camouflage and other useful knowledge of movement we will take a practical look at the connections between art, body and protest. The following questions will play a role: How do bodies get moving? How are they staged in order to make an impact in political contexts and create visibility for political concerns? What role do artistic uses of the body play in the public sphere? How is space for action created in collective actions?

The workshop consists of two parts:
On the first date, after a short input, we will approach the complex of topics primarily from a practical direction.
On the second date, we will collectively perform a walking performance in public space as part of Three’s a Party, the summer party by GAK, Künstler:innenhaus and Museum Weserburg on 20.6.2024.

Liz Rech works as a director, dramaturge and performer. After studying dramaturgy at the Bayerische Theaterakademie in Munich, she studied directing at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater / HfMT in Hamburg. Since 2007 she has been working in the border area between drama theater, performance, installation and activism. In addition, she is continuously involved in artists’ initiatives and collectives (Komm in die Gänge; Schwabinggrad Ballett). As part of her artistic research, she deals with choreographic movement practices within social movements – since 2015 she has been researching PERFORMING CITIZENSHIP – VERSAMMLUNG IN (DER) BEWEGUNG at the artistic-scientific graduate college Performing Citizenship (HCU; k3 – Center for Choreography / Hamburg).
> More about Liz Rech

Bubu Mosiashvili (b. 1997, in Tbilisi, Georgia), is an interdisciplinary artist whose work explores blind spots of histories. He focuses on hidden and discarded memories and facts that serve as the “behind the scenes” structure for dominant narratives. Mosiashvili holds a bachelor’s degree in arts from Tbilisi State Academy of Arts in 2019 and currently pursues a diploma in fine arts at the University of Arts Bremen, in the class of Natascha Sadr Haghighian. Since 2019 he was involved in organizing a Tbilisi based multidisciplinary project space MAUDI, and since 2023 he runs and organizes Library for Imaged Futures, an artist-run library in Bremen.
His exhibition stories make worlds, worlds make stories, which deals with the 28 Heerstraßen (military roads) in Bremen, can currently be seen in the Re-Framing series in the GAK poster frames.
