Hervé Garcia (b. 1971) spent his childhood and youth in Africa (Senegal) and southern France. Since the turn of the millennium he lives and works in Cologne. His artistic oeuvre is permeated by concepts of image collage or image montage, implemented in painting, drawing, artist books and sculpture. As source material he uses found reproduced images from magazines, professional publications or even comics. The term “montage” plays a special role for Garcia: he understands it in a cinematographic sense by examining precisely those connections, distances, and interstices in motifs in which new images, ways of thinking, but also dissonances are formed. He calls this friction a “zone of discomfort”, a predetermined breaking point where narratives can open up for the viewer. In addition to his artistic work, he is a band member of “Papa’s Land” and “Melted Men”. The annual editions from the series “Untitled” (2017) show cutout collages of comic motifs mounted on colored book spines.
