Toon Fibbe – Performance Too Big to Fail Too Small to Notice
As part of the exhibition You Breathe Differently Under the Weight. Debt and Credit, Toon Fibbe presents the performance Too Big to Fail Too Small to Notice. Toon Fibbe regularly deals with the history of the (US) financial market. The performance is based on an article that Fibbe found in the newspaper archive of the Wall Street Journal and which reports on how stock market traders in Chicago started wearing platform heels at the end of the 1990s. In this power-orientated environment, size mattered because the taller you were, the more visible you were – and the more visible you were, the faster you could trade. Platform heels therefore made a retailer stand out from the crowd.
