The Soul of Metamorphosis:
Plant, Animal, Human

Lecture by Oxana Timofeeva

12.05, 07:00 pm

The lecture by Oxana Timofeeva will take place at the suggestion of Alexandra Leykauf and will be introduced by her.

In her talk Oxana Timofeeva will address the idea of the soul as it was developed in philosophy, where, since antiquity, there was a division between the three kinds of soul – nutritive, or plant, sensitive, or animal, and rational, or human. Instead of recounting a hierarchical structure of this traditional division, we will think of the soul as metamorphoses and passages between these forms, intermediate monstrous forms of plant-humanity and human-bestiality and the mirroring of the one form in the other, also in religious consciousness, where, according to Hegel, the spirit first reveals itself in art, as plants and animals.

Oxana Timofeeva is a Professor at “Stasis” Center for Practical Philosophy at the European University at St. Petersburg, leading researcher at Tyumen State University, member of the artistic collective “Chto Delat?” (“What is to be done?”), deputy editor of the journal “Stasis”, and the author of the books Solar Politics (Polity 2022), History of Animals (Bloomsbury Academic, 2018), How to Love a Homeland (Kayfa ta, 2020), This is not That (In Russian, 2022), Introduction to the Erotic Philosophy of Georges Bataille (New Literary Observer, 2009, in Russian), and other writings.
