As part of her exhibition A good theory in theory in the poster frames in the outdoor area of the GAK, Belia Zanna Geetha Brückner invites for a dinner conversation. During the event, she will explore the political and social function of food, which also marks the starting point for her ongoing research: She exchanges letters with prisoners in various penal institutions and askes them about ther freedom recipes. The answers she has received are currently on view in A good theory in theory.
For the dinner conversation Belia Zanna Geetha Brückner will cook some of the recipes. Over a shared dinner, we will talk about Brückner’s artistic work as well as the discrepancy between the supposedly good-sounding theories of “resocialization” and their practical implementation. Shared meals foster sociability, creating a sense of belonging and exchange. It is not uncommon for conflicts to be resolved at the dinner table, for important decisions to be made and memories to be shared there. Yet, in German prisons, meals are rarely eaten together, reinforcing the isolating nature of imprisonment.
As part of the dinner conversation some of the letters that Brückner received along with the recipes will be read. Afterwards, the guests are invited to write response letters to the recipe contributors.
