Kate Newby, Sophie von Olfers
A relationship to the place through action

02.09, 07:00 pm

In her exhibition “Crawl out your window”, Kate Newby (*1979) uses a curtain cloth that has been washed in the river Wümme and used as a picnic blanket to divide a colored, walk-in corridor from the GAK room. Elsewhere, on the surface of a large-framed concrete ramp, in addition to foot and hand prints, tire tracks, crown caps, stones, coins and crystals can be discovered. The New Zealander, in her own words, is interested in “creating a relationship to the place through action”.

In conversation with Sophie von Olfers, curatorial assistant at the MMK Museum für Moderne in Frankfurt/Main, Kate Newby will talk about how the exhibition at the GAK came about and what artistic motivation she pursues in her work in general.

Prior to her work at the MMK, Sophie von Olfers worked as curatorial assistant at the Witte de With in Rotterdam, where she was co-curator of the group exhibition “Don Quixote” and a presentation by Liam Gillick, among others. At the MMK, she was responsible for the solo exhibition of Sarah Morris and the forthcoming opening exhibition “Not in Fashion” (25.09.2010-09.01.2011). From December 2010 she will be curator at Portikus in Frankfurt/Main.
